Falls Lake Tournament

| The dog days of summer are here. After one day of practice, I knew the crankbait bite was on. We were also sharing the lake with the Boats Unlimited tournament which consisted of 25-30 bass boats. With the water level low, I concentrated my practice efforts toward the dam. I was surprised to find that a lot of other tournament boats were fishing in this area. My first fish came on a Carolina rigged lizard around 6 a.m. All my fish were caught on deep red clay banks. I focused mainly on these places because of the water level and this would have deeper water on it than some of the other places in the area. The water temperature at this end of the lake was around 88 so the fish, being pulled off the bank and moving towards their normal summer patterns, wouldn't be in water less than 4 feet deep. I was seeing fish on my Lowrance depth finder suspended off of the red clay banks and a lot of baitfish in the 10 ft. range. I started throwing a zoom crankbait and caught 8 keepers from 3 different spots in the same area. I fished other spots during the day hoping to get 1 or 2 big bites to cull out a little one that I had in the well. Great day on the water and look forward to next month at Macintosh. |
